Hi guys... I'm a courier with Excel, but for a few days am working with a TV production company hoping to make a Panorama documentary about us guys (by which I mean cyclists, and not just couriers) getting munched by HGVs.

Basically, Panorama are interested, but are not interested if all we have is a London-based issue. To a lesser extent they're only partially interested in incidents from Oxford and Cambridge, what, therefore, I'm after, are cases from around the land, showing the HGV thing to be the nationwide concern that any cyclist using a road regularly will know it to be. I'm asking about on LFGSS (London fixed-gear single speed, for those outside the south-east) too, and if anyone recalls recent incidents in home towns, has heard stuff from riders elsewhere in the country, then let me know, and I'm happy to chase any leads myself.

Cheers very much in advance, take care out there

Hopefully it's helpful. Sorry if it sounds like a lecture-I realise some will already know most of this.
The darker the shade of green the harder it is for the driver to see you-ASSUMING HE'S LOOKING IN THE CORRECT MIRROR to see you.
Red areas are completely blind to the driver.Note the blind areas directly in front and to the right of the cab. They are big enough to lose someone pushing a cycle flat against the truck.

Pic 1) and pic 2) Truck turning left/on a left hand bend.
Rear of the trailer will be moving closer to the kerb and further to the left than the cab.
The cab will be on the white line or even crossing into the other carriageway depending on how sharp the turn is and how wide the road is.
Driver is HIGHLY unlikely to be looking in his right hand mirror unless to check if the corner of the trailer is in the right hand lane-and all he'll see in it is the headboard of the trailer if he is.
Predominantly he'll be looking in the left mirror/ahead.

Pic 3) Truck going in a straight line.
This is also the same visiblity as a rigid or non-articulated vehicle. Assume the driver is using his mirrors only in the direction of travel in a rigid vehicle.
If the truck is stationary or it's safe to do so-(ie assuming no oncoming traffic there needs to be no bends in the road coming up and the truck isn't indicating) then this is the safest time to overtake.
DO NOT UNDERTAKE while it's moving-and if you MUST undertake then only do so if you KNOW the truck isn't going to move before you're past.
DO NOT pull up in the nearside red zone by the cab.The kerbside mirror shows very little. If the driver is going to miss you, unless you're directly behind the trailer this is where he'll miss you while the truck is stationary.
We'd far rather you pulled up directly in front of us and we could see you.

Pic 4) and pic 5) Truck turning right/on a right hand bend.
Rear of the trailer will be on the white line or even crossing into the other carriageway depending on how sharp the turn is and how wide the road is.
BEWARE the back end of the trailer-if this is a very sharp bend the rear of the trailer will be moving to the left as it pivots round the axles. This is a SERIOUS crush hazard and the driver CANNOT SEE IT at all and is unlikely to know the trailer has hit someone. I once ripped the front bumper and valence from a Discovery that tried to push through and I didn't feel it.
Driver will be splitting attention between right mirror(back of trailer),left mirror(Is the headboard going to intrude on the path?) and ahead.

If an articulated lorry isn't stopped in a straight line DON'T undertake. Your chances of being seen are slim if bent left and nil if bent right and you're likely to get crushed as either the cab or trailer will be coming very close to the kerb.
For the same reason don't cycle up behind one in the red zone at speed then pass-the driver may already have comitted to a manoevre because his mirrors look clear."

 Hi everyone,

A friend of mine asked me to spread the word, as he's working on a Nokia internet ad that requires three couriers riding fixed-wheel bikes. It looks like it will pay £300 each for around 1.5 days' work. Boys only I'm afraid.

Casting is this Thursday, the ad's shooting later in the month. I've pasted all the details in below. I don't know much more than this, but if you get in touch I'll try to help out. Better to talk to the casting director.

Cheers

Max

_______

Max,

The project I spoke to you about is a for a Viral for Nokia to be directed by Ed and Rory McHenry.

Anyone interested should send a head shot and a full length shot (preferably with Rider and bike), along with their contact details to the Casting Director who will arrange Casting times. This required a commitment to a days filming ( it will be a part of that day) and a half day rehearsal ( dates tba).

Shoot Date is one of either: 20th , 26th or 27th. Anyone interested should make it clear if they cannot make any of these dates.

The Casting Session is to be held at Mission in Mercer Street , Covent Garden, in the afternoon of Thursday Sept 2nd. Tree will arrange the times of the call so Head shots and pictures of Courier with bike to be sent to her email address below.

casting@treepetts.co.uk

Tree Mob: 07966283252

Casting Brief: 3 x COURIERS. It's pretty rare to be asked to do a job outside the city and this is one of the longest I've done,” Mr Urie said.

Mr Urie set off from Screen East's office at Leavesden Studios, Watford at 10.55am, on his single-speed bike, arriving at Millennium Plain, Norwich at about 4.30pm.

Mr Harrington said: “That's impressive.

“I'm delighted Alex got our application there safely and in such a low-carbon way.”

Have you got an environmental story for the Evening News? Hi everyone, I am thinking about starting up a courier bike business. I am not from the UK, but regardless, I'm sure my city can support such an endeavour. Now, initially, it will be a two man show - equipped with bikes, bags, and 2 way cell phones, dispatched through direct call, page or, email accounts.

The front-end of the website I will be building, but need a coder to collect and distribute payments and accounts. This is where I hesitate... I'm not really sure on a pricing scheme - or how about to go about inquiring (that's why I'm here :)).

I would like someone to explain to me some of the intricacies of the business... Payment, zoning, guaranteed delivery times, dispatch, things like that. I mean, basically, I need to know even small details like what happens if you get a couple of cold-calls (out of the blue requests for delivery), and payment is in cash? What's the normal drill? Drop off, deduction from you pay, etc?

I just don't know. I am hoping to find someone who does or at least can point me to another resource. :)

Thanks all for your time, can't wait to be back on the road again!
