For me it's been only 11 years riding but I don't mind questions - apologies for assuming the same.

Hi Lumpy, I am not cross, bored or divisive, just curious. When you say 'riding for eleven years' do you mean as a messenger?
A friend of mine once counted the exact number of miles he did in one week, he just got depressed. Miles does not always add up to money, sometimes it's indicative of bad controlling.
  7.
    aaaaaaaand we're back to Bill.
  8.
No - I mean riding as a mountain biker, roadie, commuter and general pedal head.
Most people ask the same questions to commuters and known bike geeks at places I have worked and always they come to you for advice, mending punctures...the usual.

Before that I was in to motorbikes for many years and worked for a while as a courier at West 1 on my 400/4.

You wouldn't have to be a genius to win a "Spot The Company" competition by looking at that, would you?

No-one does 500 miles - not even Metro.
When I had a computer on my bike, was in pretty decent shape and worked at a top circuit covering the West End and City sides, I usually got close to 80 miles a day - but that included 10 or 11 in and another 10 or 11 home again.

Being rather a pussy messenger I only do about 35-40 on a fairly busy day, so I reckon I do about 150 a week including journey from home and back
  11.
I had a clock on for a while at Creative. I was averaging 50/60 miles, normally actually on the bike for 5 hours out of the 10.
  12.
Back when it was busy i use to do a minumum of 60 a day sometimes 70 plus. That's including ride in. Then i would dance all weekend. Now 50 miles kills me...

@bill, my computer has a clock on as well. it tells me that out of the 9 hours between leaving the house and getting back, i'm only actually pedalling for 3-4 hours!

The funny thing is whenever someone asks how many miles I do, they say something like "whoa thats a lot" regardless of how many miles I tell them. I told this one geezer I was disappointed that I'd only done 35 mile on a fairly busy day (most of the jobs I got were less than a mile away) and the guy goes "what, 'only' 35 miles?!that's a lot, chap!" I tried to tell him that that isn't much, but he still seemed surprised and impressed, he goes "yeah but most people couldn't do that!" .... yeah but the point is that I could easily do that in 3 hours and not even be particularly tired, whereas spread over 8 hours it would be a piece of piss for most people...
  13.
Spirogiro, are you taking the piss?
I've worked at the despatch industry's equivalent of McDonald's several times. I should think I know almost all of their top riders....well, those of them who speak English.
I'm so effectively banned by the twats that I reckon everyone in the office has heard of me. (Even though I've never actually left them on bad terms, my disagreements with other companies seem to have spooked them.) A few years ago an acuaintance went to re-start at McDonald's. Hans produced a "blacklisted ex-riders" file to check him out. Allegedly, the Kraut Crossdresser opened the front cover and page one had a picture of me with "Do not re-employ under any circumstances" written by it. Personally I don't believe him. McDonald's wouldn't be well-enough organised to have a "blacklisted ex-riders" file.

As for you, Red Rum.....well, you're a decent bloke and a decent rider (even if you did work for McDonald's for ages), so I'm not taking your comment seriously. Good luck with whatever you're doing.
At the moment I ride really slowly, as I'm stuck in an office. 83 days 'til I go back on the road. Can't come soon enough. See all you tossers at the start of September.

@Count Basie, I've been a controller at Security Despatch/Citysprint for 10 years plus 7 yrs as a rider and I haven't the faintest idea who you are, nor have my colleagues who have been on the road/controlling since the ark. I suppose it's possible that you've worked for us over the years but you obviously didn't make much of an impression.

You come across as a very sad, embitterred man and I take exception to your zenophobic comment abour our riders. We have a large fleet, comprising all nationalitys, all of whom it its my pleasure to work with regardless of their 1st language.

when i worked at sd/sprint i found them all to be charming.
i also know a guy called miles. i don't know if this pushes the argument on though.

McDonald's are quite nice...so long as you don't point out that they ain't doing what you're paying them 50% of your wages to do.
They are quite nice...so long as you don't object to advertising for them free. (The going rate for advertising by riding a liveried bike around Central London is between £300 and £400 per day.)
Come the revolution, I'd even let The Powers That Be at City Sprint remain in the industry - though they'd have to operate McDonald's within the law. (All office staff at Premier and Courier Systems would be executed in public at dawn tomorrow.)

Being a shade pedantic, Spiro, "Xenophobia" starts with an "X", not a zee.
"Nationalities" is written thus...at least it is in English.
It was more the native English speakers I was talking about above - the Germans and Slavs of my acquaintance speak good English.

Having worked at Scrutton Street, Shepherd Market, White Bear Yard, Bolsover Street and Caledonian Road, I find it a bit staggering that nobody in the control room at Stalag Shoreditch knows me. In fact, I'm going to have to find out who you are, because that's a ridiculous statement - even by the standards of this forum.
