Face it kids: once you're On The Black - you're stuck. And the longer you stay, the harder it gets to leave. Eventually you don't want to leave. Re-invention, that's the answer - embrace the unknown. You'll never know unless you try.

dunno but as you're self employed i doubt they need to do much record keeping. who u work for? could you ask them?

The smart thing to do is to contact an accountant who specialises in couriers (there are a ton), and get some free and confidential advice. You may find that the amount of tax you actually owe is surprisingly small.

i agree with Bill. From my own experience i'd say don't worry too much; you may have to pay something but it shouldn't break the bank. Being 'economical' with the truth is quite easy with the Tax people; mostly they are just glad to have someone coming back into the system; you won't be the Wesley Snipes of the courier world.

i was out of the country for 7 years, then came back and started working. naturally i did not have the P45 needed to correctly assess my tax rate. so, i was on emergency rate tax (BR) for the first few months, until my correct tax code was sent though to the payroll company.

this could easily be you, you know?

you've been travelling around the world for 2 years, or something. they can't prove it and i doubt they care. you are not a high priority in the tax evasion stakes.

Exactly what Lurkette said, you could even have been sponging off girlfriend/boyfriend for a few years. Never had any problems switching to paye myself, the question never came up, though at one point they sent a letter saying I may have payed too much and asked for a break down of the last few years, but mainly they're just happy you're paying.

thanks for the advice guys!, i worked it all out and basically as long as i'm economical with the truth i shouldnt be paying anything really, maybe £100 fine but not much more than that.
    cheers

The way to navigate everything in modern life/society is to play dumb. Tax? whats that...

DONT withhold your tax and then tell the tax man that you begrudge paying to bomb people and for gordon browns Sky packages. They will go after you like a rabid poodle...

ignorance is the best defence. Go find a lawyer and ask them to explain mens rea. I can't be arsed.

    "Ignorance is no defence unfortunately."

Ummmmm, I was once hauled in for questioning after being caught recieving a benefit for me and my boyfriend and also recieving single persons benefit.
The last two lines of the taped interview were

INTERVIEWER "Do you honestly expect us to believe that you are that you are so stupid you didn't realise you were getting 2 sets of benefit"

    ME "Yes"

    No further action was taken.

save all your receipts. its scary how much you spend on bike stuff. it made me realise that i spend half my wages after rent on bike stuff. but you can get that all off on expenses and in theory you could get your food off too... so when it comes to it you could legit pay fuck all....

Ignorance is no defence legally with the taxman, I read that recently but can't find where it's written now.

And the Inland Revenue aren't the DHSS, different boys. I've heard they actuallky wear those watches with calculators on them.

Anyway, I had a very interesting conversation last night with a courier who's claiming 20p a mile against his tax return. Food for thought.
  6.
I think he should be claiming 25p/mile. Guesstimate of average courier mileage = 300? Annual 15 000 X 0.25 (err, calculator) = tax allowance of 3 250 to add to 5 000, average courier earning 325/week = 16 900/year so pay tax on less than half.

Oh, and you should be able to claim food, 20% of computer if you do your accounts on it etc etc
  7.
i'm happy to say that after 11 years of being 'invisible' i started work (not as a messenger), told them i'd been 'out of the country' for many years and now, 2 years later, everything seems to be fine.
    amazing sense of relief.
