Anyone know anything about trade unions and couriers? how they work? If anyone's tried starting one in the UK? Was thinking about it cause of the lamentable demise of LBMA. I spose everyone would just get sacked if we went on strike though...
  1.
The GMB has a couriers section currently operating. It's run by the same guy that does the passenger car section.

Unionisation has been tried several times:

    Despatch Industry Workers Union
London Bicycle Couriers Union (which became the couriers branch of the TGWU)
    IWW couriers section

and there was also the London Cycle Messengers Assoc (kind of forerunner of the LBMA).

The LBMA didn't sort out a thing with employers. Not a thing.

The TGWU was ineffective, but the GMB launched the action against citysprint just before Xmas that was reported here. The IWW never had more than a few members, so could not be so effective.

The DIWU did a lot of stuff, which can be read in the link that Rakan has supplied.

There was a wild-cat strike at SMS 4 years ago (SMS deliver credit cards), but it fizzled after initially worrying the management.
