although genes play a role everyone can put a certain degree of muscle on. they're only important really at the top end of sport when you need to be anthropometrically suited for the requirments or your sport.
protein is important to getting big but more importantly its how much you eat. especially as your burning calories all day everyday. very basically to put on weight you need total energy expenditure to be less than total energy uptake (ie how many calories your puttin in). try adding an extra meal a day at first see how that goes for a month, if your still not as big as you want increase snacks and add another meal.
if you can try to get 5 medium size meals a day and then supplement with snacks, obviously as your workin it may be tricky to do that but it works proper good. esp if you combine it with good protein, ie meat. if your vegan than i guess tofu. i aint ever had that so i cant tell you if its a dood source of protein or not but eat lots of it.
protien powders are good only if you buy the one's that work, i use somethin called collostrum, its made by neovite(.com) and it works, however it is quite expensve £80 for 1kg. i used to use maximuuscle stuff but i felt i was being conned as the only difference i got was gettin the shits all the time.
you can also try using creatine but be careful with it as people have died from it missusing it before. i hear that for the 1st couple weeks of using that you get the shits real bad aswell so make sure you know where the toilets are if you do start.
also if your really serious about gettin big legs join a gym and get squattin. if you want an awesome leg workout for the gym whisper me back. the beatuy of it is that if you do it properly it'll take your legs a week to recover properly. not great for work but your legs will balloon.
All meat is good protein? Not sure about that one.
Also, as any vegan will be able to tell you, there are more sources of vegetable protein than tofu. If you combine your food groups you will obtain whole protein.
one other point are you looking to increase mass or strength?
the difference being bodybuilders have a lot of mass but comparitely little strength for the size of muscle, whereas it's possible to strength train but not increase the size of mucsle that greatly.
Well, first of all thanks for yer advice so far, but it weren't really advice that I was looking for! i was just curiously wondering if other peoples legs had gotten bigger since courierisationmenting.
TBH they're not that skinny, but the fact that I'm quite tall just makes me look thin.
Re: strength vs. mass... I think my legs are as strong as I want them to be, cos I don't have any difficulty getting up any of the hills around here...
Might try eating more protein... though unlike carbs you can't store extra protein anywhere, you just converti it to ammonia compounds and piss it out if I remember correctly...
Look Nik, I don't want to get into an argument about meat over any other kind of protein, but steaks may be good quality protein, but as they are relatively indigestible compared to other sources of protein (any study of basic nutrition will show this), they are not a _useful_ source of protein. I like a nice steak as much as the next guy, but if I am looking for a good source of dietary MEAT protein, I would be thinking of chicken, which is a lot easier to digest.
Anyway back to the point: sure if you over do the protein, you will piss it out or put it on as fat, but too little and your muscle gets canibalized. Ideally you want to be eating a nice source of protein immediately after finishing work. Like a peanut butter sandwich or seven.
They did get alot bigger when I started working, and they're sorta out of control now. I wouldn't say that I do the best job at getting all the protien I should, I'm vegan but I do try hard to at least have a fairly balenced diet (although I'm a bit heavy on the b foods at the moment...beer, bagels and bloody marys).
The thing is, that having huge legs does not make you faster. I'm pretty darn slow most of the time, and my best mate is very very fast, and his legs are....well, not puny, but I certainly wouldn't go misty eyed about them.
Advantages to having big legs? ummm....none, really. Although my young man likes them.
i'm not gonna get into a argument on diet either cos its silly, but suffice it to say i'm nearly 15 stones at present and thats after losing nearly 2 stone a few weeks ago (i've actually put on near 4 stone), not to mention i got less than 9% body fat. so i'll keep doing what i do cos it works for me.
having big legs doesn't make you go faster cos they add weight and are less aerodynamic aswell. HOWEVER they do look very cool, if i knew how to post pictures i'd put some up of some freaky body builder muscles, and also chris hoy's cos he's both quick and has massive legs.
as for steroids, they're only bad if you abuse, which around 90% of people that take them do, it is actually possible to ween yourself on and off them without doing massive harm. but i'm not gonna advocate their use cos i personally dont agree wth taking them (+ their illegal, but an odd illegal, its only illegal to sell, i think buying and possesion is alright but not 100%).
@ si cleest if you do decide to go to a gym i can give you some workouts to increase mass relatively quickly, they're pretty brutal but its only once a week or every 5 days depending on how quick your recovery is, it might also be wise to get a partner aswell if you do, cos i passed out half way through one of the workouts and nearly dropped a large amount of weight on myself. also some people find having a partner motivating.
all the best in your quest for 'wheels of steel' as they say in body building circles.
yes it is, but its also really cool. dont pretend that you dont like lookin at their freaky muscles covered in fake tan and oil and going 'eeeerrrrrggggghhhhh! thats nasty' when they flex. but yet you cant look away cos it draws you in.
go to any gym that people go to, to bulk up. you'll find em pretty easy. even if you dont go looking for em you'll probablly get approached. i got asked when i was 15 by some guy in my school gym, i politely declined.
Terese, though not someone that would normally spring to mind as having big legs, does have some pretty big legs. It's just that all of her is pretty darn tiny, but in proportion her legs are the business. I also have done well at roller racing, and my legs are huge.
I can also attest to both charlie and jenky's leg size....not small. not in the least.
