    alright,

    can't find these rims anywhere:

they're quite deep, about 3 and a half cm... anyone know a good place to mail order some similar ones from? free postage preferably. my local bike shop can't get any, apparently.

they're probably an oem [original equipment market] item, many products are made for bicycle companies that are not imported as a stand alone item. your best bet for a similar item is velocity deep v's, not quite so deep but my personal fave are mavic cxp33s. oh and btw oem stuff is usually shit that's been made to look nice to sell the bike it's intended for, aftermarket all the way baby

    cheers sleepy.

tom (soy-lidarity) recommended both of those rims to me the other day too..

its a pain in the arse trying to order rims online because the sites never say how deep the rims are.

    feeling better by the way?

much better thanks, kinda weird though tbh... anyways mavic cxps are 23.5mm:

    and deep v's are:

bear in mind that deep rims often require some fairly outlandish spoke lengths (depending on your choice of hub and spoke pattern). i know lots of places are having trouble sourcing certain sizes from dt and sapim.
  1.
DO NOT order from rutlandcycling dot whatever. I ordered some Open Pros (the only rims to use, by the way) from them EIGHT WEEKS ago. 2x 650c CDs and 2x 700c black. Website said they were in stock. If they were so in stock why have they been "on backorder with mavic" for the last 2 months?!?!? All cos they were £4 cheaper than Condor. Sheeesh.

I have tried that 53x12 place and they say £35 for deep v's plus £10 postage. £10 postage is a bit much, man. They seem to be the only place that stocks them other than brick lane bikes. Gonna email them now and hopefully it won't come to more than £40 in total.

Otherwise I will have to keep pestering the bloke in my local bike shop, I asked him for a 30mm rim months ago and he hasn't been able to source one....

the pictured rims are imported by autostrada (mike kowal). and oem on the pearson touche, hh speedster, wills wheels winter trainer, and many other stores fixies.

i've sold two of these bikes, both had issues with the rims. soft aluminium. brake blocks dont like them. so we ended up replacing one with open pro's , the other with cxp 33's.

that bike as a complete is, in my opinion, not worth the money. the fact that it was one of the few frames out there with mudguard clearance is now negated by the genesis skyliner

    deep v's need sapim nipples.

i have deep v's in manchester - whisper me for prices and available colours. i only have pairs-32h, machined/painted - i'm sure we can work out something on the postage.

on the subject of mavic - dont hold your breath for anything thats gotta be ordered from rj chicken - mavic importer. their warehouse was raised last week by a 17yr old arsonist. normal service to resume in 4 weeks so they say... so the aksium wheelsets that i've had on backorder for the last two months might turn up early next year...

soft aluminium rims, hell yes, they're weak as fuck, it had worn so thin after about 6 months that it bent out when i hit a little pothole - and thats with correct tyre pressure.

what bike do you think i should have bought instead?

i almost got an on-one pompino which is the only other £500ish bike i could get hold of .

btw i think i will just get the cxp33 rim and some new spokes, it'll work out cheaper and easier than re-using my old spokes and getting the correct depth rim.

reusing spokes is also not a great way to build a nice new wheel IMHO. if that's your bike in the top pic which hubs are they? they look like they might be oem EX hubs [same as on the genesis and fillmore], cartridge bearings, nice machined flanges [we all love a nice machined flange] etc, if so they're pretty decent. they also look like they might be the same as on the fuji and langster, in which case they're a pile of poo and want replacing before lacing to a tasty set of cxps.

They're Formula hubs. The flanges aren't sealed. They work fine for me, although the cartridge bearings went a bit wobbly in the rear after 8 months. I replaced the bearings (£9 a pair) and its fine now.

I reckon 'open' bearings would have lasted longer though, it's way cheaper to replace them, and they last longer with regular maintenance.

i *think* EX and formula are one and the same so all good there.

i hear what you're saying about open bearings but it really depends on the quality. i think alot companies are changing to cartridges because cheap shit cartridges can be upgraded easily and are way better than cheap cup and cone bearings which can't really be upgraded. all the same high end cup n cone a la XTR or dura ace really are the bollocks. my 5p
