Hello all. I was on the road for almost a year and recently left. I still work in the industry though.
I'm posting on here because I know there are a lot of leftys on the road. You have lots of contact with small businesses and charities and it would be great to get some bike couriers on board.
I'm writing as one of the newer members of Boycott Workfare. This is a group that's less than a year old and is fighting against a government programme that is affecting, and will affect in particular, bike couriers. Workfare is a programme that is forced unpaid labour, getting unemployed people to work for free in places like Tesco and Poundland for free for stretches of up to 6 months for 30 hours a week. Replacing real jobs. One of our strategies is to get charities and small businesses to sign our pledge and then build on from there. Check out boycottworkfare.org. We have more material that is not on the website yet.
THIS WILL AFFECT YOU - When this programme really starts to get running, how many new people will there be who are willing to sit outside the big accounts all day for next to nothing? Answer: a hell of a lot. These sort of policies should be like stoking a fire on the left. Get involved.
This is the only post of this kind that I've posted and I'm posting here because I'd really like to see this associated with you lot. I'm not pretending to be an old hand that knows the history of the industry but surely this is where it belongs?
With that I'll say much love and solidarity. I'll hope to see some of you around.
We have a meeting in Finsbury Park this Wednesday. 7pm. The more the merrier. CAAT, 11 Goodwin Street, Finsbury Park, N4 3HQ
