So, I need a new bag. My current/old one was handmade for me by an ex some time ago, and it's coped well over the years, but it's basically reached the point where if I keep using it, it's going to go past the point of no return and end up useless / in the bin as trash. I'm a sentimental cnut, I like kittens and all that shit, so, before that happens, I thought i'd buy a new one.
PAC bags look good but expensive, and I'm poor. Chrome Metropolis bags seems a good combo of product/price/performance, but all the hipster kids love them and the old 'press the buckle release' joke gets old fast I imagine - anyone here actually use a metropolis for messengering, and does it live up to the hype? Same question with timbuk2 bags I guess.
I've seen that black rainbow project thing online for a while but are they ever actually going to start making bags? And will they be affordable?
The Chrome Berlin looks pretty brilliant but it's $220 I can't work out whether it's a sensible investment for a messenger, i.e. chrome's attempt at the best possible messenger bag they can make, or just a bit of hipster bling for the fixie skidders.
Reccomendations folks? What do you use, how does it hold up, and how much did it cost? Overall I just need the thing to be tough as fuck, to cope with being treated like shit, skidded across tarmac, to carry children/dogs/ice and beer and general heavy shit and to not have to worry about the thing breaking or being really uncomfortable.
TimBuk"Unused max sized black messenger with rubber shoulder pads thrown in as well" --- This from a friend of mine, ex-enger. Selling for £60...interested?
@Kips...Black Rainbow Project already are making bags, and have been for months...I just haven't OFFICIALLY launched the brand or completed the whole range. If you need info about them, the best way to get it is always to email the actual company in question non? Oui.....or alternatively, just buy Overdrive a can of Red stripe and ask him. As for affordable...the bags are a long way from cheap it's true, and I would love to be able to make them from the same materials, with the same features, and to the same standards for less, but unfortunately that just isn't possible as a one man company right now. They are almost certainly an investment...whether or not you feel they are worth that much of your money is entirely up to you. Bags are something that everybody has a different opinion on, and what one person considers essential in a bag, another considers superfluous. Good luck finding one that suits. BRP
I was gonna buy a new bag, but saw the crumplers and thought I could do better job so I bought a Juki 555 industrial, 120 metre of 1000d P.U.Cordura , black and blue plus about 60metres 500d liner, also water proof and have been leaning how to pattern cut and sew since. I spent way more than had but I hope to make a return on the investment.
Anyway, I've also knda learnt how to make water proof shell jackets and arm and leg warmers. Business looks ke it could be good, maybe retire the wheels and cycle for just for fun.
I just had a look at black rainbow and that looks good. I suppose if I was gonna go down that route I would just look at a three year life time. i want my stuff to be replaceable, strong and cheap. New feels good, new gives a chance to modify and improve the original design. less than a 100 quid, thats a price I could pay when i was doing the graft.
Save up for a Pac, not as rare or exclusive as they once were, but the best I ever used? I had a reputation for taking STUPIDLY big stuff and the ultimate oversize NEVER let me down.
Freight Baggage and SkinGrowsBack also make good bags, never used either but not heard a bad word about either. Both designed by teams of Veteran Messengers.
Also used Timbuk, Chrome and Reload... but none of them lasted very well.
Was missing Messengering... or missing the idea of it, anyways. Plus out of work (for the moment) so got plenty of time to ride my bike and post on message(r) boards. Anyone who wants to come down and visit me in Brighton (well worthing...) let me know. Sure I can persude Crissi and son to come along too?
Not considered a Bagaboo? Not *perfect*, but pretty good value IMO. You can order from the website www.bagaboo.hu, or Cavendish Cycles usually have some in.
"Humour" aside If you're looking for a hardwearing, expertly crafted courier bag and you have the cash I don't think you can do much better than The Black Rainbow Project messenger bag. Some of you have checked out the bag already,I'm road-testing it for BRP,and have been impressed with it.I have used Pac bags for years and always swore by them but compared to this bag they seem somewhat lightweight,I used my last Pac bag for every working day over the last seven years and love the design of it but it's started to deteriorate.
The BRP has the feel of bag that really will last a lifetime and I think that is the point of it so in that respect it is worth every penny. If you know anything about bags and wanna check it out stop me if you see me on the road and you'll see what I mean. And have a can of Redstripe ready.
