Former British Heavyweight Champion Gary Mason was killed by a van whilst cycling near his Wallington home yesterday. Many McDonald's riders will remember him from the several years he spent in the dungeon at Scrutton Street, working in the rider/driver liaison department, having previously been a minicab driver with the firm. Never met the bloke personally, but people I know always rated him a sound chap.
OK. I own up. I am going senile. Gary Mason worked in driver/rider liaison at the Lewis Day version of the ex-West1 (I think!), not the City Sprint version of the ex-West1. If riders and management of the pair didn't switch between the two so often, I wouldn't get so confused. He certainly drove a minicab at LD.
Oh he definitely worked at City Sprint. I remember him working the door at the xmas party one year.
Yeah, he was a pretty decent guy. One time I was sent inside to get something with the golden arches on it and Parris came over smirking and gave me a specially tailored shirt the size of a marquee. I soon shut-the-fuck-up when I saw him across the room trying hard not to notice my sarcasm. He was a pretty big guy, I felt sorry for him a couple of times as he got stared at a hell of a lot. If you could just see him trying to perch one buttock on an office chair you would understand.
