Proposed route London to Fishguard:
http://routeplanner.rac.co.uk//showrouting.php?map24_sid=1BA3J8cIs12dp4re6ebGCo2C5wA7zZzCkeLOyWPjzSI3k7NSNxY2HgjQNKl1Sx8GDMf4pdYeESaYMUSGElzYCw&t=0f3e733ddec155676d3b4a93515deb23
This is about the same distance as London to Holyhead but uses better riding country (Wiltshire is alright and so is South Wales, London to Holyhead is mostly crap
until North Wales as far as I know)

Also Bristol and Cardiff are both towns with a handful of couriers so there'll be a couple of little alleycats for anyone with energy to spare.

It looks like one or two vans should be coming along so we will be camping, except maybe a night in Bristol where I may be able to find floorspace
(depending on turnout)

The ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare is the same price as Holyhead-Dublin. £20 one way for a foot passenger. About £200 for a van with 5 passengers.

Of course Rosslare isn't Dublin so that leaves us with an extra 95 miles to ride up the Irish coast.

Leave London Monday 30th July arrive Dublin Thursday 2nd August.

Anyone planning to ride let me know at Josh193 at gmail dot com

There's a few people emailed me saying they're interested in doing the ride, between 12-17 so far. So its definitely happening.

A bit more detail on the route.

Sunrise is around 5.25 and sunset 20.45 this week so we have some time to ride.

Stage 1
Monday 30 July
London to Calne
About 90 Miles
Avebury ancient stone circle is a few miles before Calne for dinner and a pint. The furthest a courier group has previously made it from London is
Avebury I think, or maybe stonehenge for equinox (but there weren't any couriers on that one?)
Camping at Calne.

Stage 2
Tuesday 31 July
Calne to Bridgend via Bristol and Cardiff
About 85 Miles
There are some couriers in the cities on this day (or 1 at least) so there may be a bit of alleycat action today.
Camping near Bridgend.

Stage 3
Wednesday 1 August
Bridgend to Fishguard
About 88 miles
Ferries at 18.30 fast 2 hrs to Rosslare which leaves us enough time to get to the the campsite a few miles north at dusk.
Or a slow ferry at 02.45 if you can handle sleeping in ferry waiting rooms and on the boat.
The Pembroke Dock - Rosslare route would save us a few miles riding but the ferry times don't work out.

Stage 4
Thursday 2 August
Rosslare to Dublin
98 miles
Make sure you get somewhere to stay in Dublin lined up I reckon.

I'll make sure every rider has basic route maps and contact numbers because forcing us to ride as a group would slow everyone down, these rides usually
work better if people are able to go in smaller groups with people going their own pace. Something to do with different bikes, abilities, fixies going cross
country etc. Everyone gets there in the end at their own pace.
I may try and figure out a way for it there to be some racing, but probably not. We'll all know who's strongest anyway.

We can get campsites for about £5-£7 a night each. If anyone is able to bring camping gear, they should.

Ferry ticket for a foot passenger (and bike) £20 one way.

The van with two drivers will cost about £280 - £350 Rtn Ferry plus approx. £140 for fuel, which will have to be split between everyone riding.

Another possibility is a van only going to Fishguard and maybe somebody has a van in Dublin and could come and get the bags from Rosslare, or our drivers
could jump on the train with them, probably impractical.
At the moment there are one or two vans that we might be able to use, hopefully we won't have to hire one. If somebody can't lend one or drive their own for us,
what do you think of getting some courier companies international dept. to ship bags to Dublin?
Makes camping difficult but the savings on the van would be the difference with staying in hostels or pubs.

Anyone got any opinions or ideas about all this, tell me.

the whole trip sounds great ....the only problem I can see with shipping bags to Dublin is that they would have to go international rather than overnite and that drives the cost right up...I think it's about 17:50 for the first 0.5 kilo and 3 or 4 pounds for each half kilo after that. Maybe there is a company that does it for less but on this basis the van could work out cheaper.

I'm pretty sure there will be a van. There are three possibles at the moment, one at least should come off, a couple of other people to ask if they all fall through.

Also there looks likely to be enough riders that even if we have to hire a van the cost would be manageable, I don't think it will come to that though.

Of course I work at a courier company so I get good rates on international jobs but I'm not really looking at that option.

This is the bit for London Calling book about the ride, I don't want to spoil the surprise of that book but I still get asked a lot of the questions answered here

Ride to Dublin

You have to get up Monday morning and be at London Fields by 9.30 in the morning ready to go, we leave 10am sharp.

Ride is 4 days, 360 miles thats 580k, and one ferry ride Wednesday evening, arrive Dublin Thursday. You get a photocopied map but it's a good idea to spend a few quid and buy a proper one. You can ride as a bunch but the ride is set up so you can ride solo or in small groups if you want, there will be checkpoints where we all meet up en route, instead of trying to ride as one big group all day. There is a van to Fishguard which can take your bag, tent and sleeping bag, you have to take it on the ferry yourself and then another van is coming down from Dublin to meet us at the Irish port of Rosslare for the final days ride. We don't go over any mountains but lots of rolling hills and maybe one or two real hills. You'll be OK on a rightly geared fixed if you're used to it because all the load goes in the van, but expect a sore arse and knees.

Some of you may chance the no tent approach, good luck to you - it can rain a lot in the west and Wales, not to mention Ireland. We will stop at proper campsites each night. If you want luxury or don't have a tent, it won't be too hard to find a bed for the night along the way, if you have cash.

Petrol expenses for the vans are going to be shared between the riders, should be £10-20 each, a ferry foot passenger ticket costs £20 one way. There is a T-shirt for a few quid.

Quick question: is this a courier-only event or are civilians acceptable? This is only in theory, as I'll be doing Dunwich over the weekend and am in any case in no way fit enough to contemplate 90-odd miles a day for several days. Presuming I ever manage to get myself a bit more exercised hough, this sounds like a great way to spend a few days.

Edited version of the email I just sent to everyone doing the ride, if anyone else is still contemplating it.

There is a van, one van, it goes all the way to Dublin.

There are a lot of people doing the ride.

one van + a lot of people = sorry I can't guarantee that bike boxes and stuff can go in the van, really its unlikely. The proviso is that the weather is orrible so if it stays this way then the weak might drop out and space might appear.

Hopefully there's space for a tent and courier bag for everyone that wants to ride, thats it.

If you have bulky gear I can arrange somewhere safe to store it in London 'til you get back.

Alternatively I can get discounted shipping on items to Dublin. I have no idea how much that will be though, it depends entirely on size and weight. There is one other bloke driving later who can take a small car load of overflow if he has notice that he needs to.

Let me know beforehand if you're bringing stuff that needs storing or transporting to Dublin.

We can transport a couple of bikes back to London on Monday night if you're flying back to London from Dublin. If you haven't booked a return to London yet the train is cheap and you can take your bike without a box (if theres not many other bikes on the train)

I have booked campsites for the first (near Calne, Wiltshire) and second (Porthcawl, South Glamorgan) nights of the ride and will be booking the third (Wexford) soon, budget about £5-7 a night if you want to stay there.

I don't have a spare tent, somebody in London might, if you ask nicely.

If you want a roof over your head at night try the YHA in Avebury (night 1) and Swansea (2) http://www.yha.org.uk Wexford is the town for night 3.

The van will meet us at the start and end of each day and once or twice along the way, the driver won't be driving along behind us handing out spare wheels, you'll need basic tools, clothing and food or money for the day.

I am writing a route guide but you will need to get a road map for the English and Welsh bits of the ride, the Irish bit is simpler (straight up the coast) the hardest section of the trip in terms of navigation and hills is west Wales, and that is also where you don't want to dawdle cos you'll miss the ferry, so getting a good map of that section is important.

I can't give detailed directions across the cities we go through, just the road and direction to take out of town, but you are couriers so cope with it. I'll try and get the group together as much as possible for the complicated bits of the route, so we can all get lost together.

The ride starts at London Fields West Side E8 (Hackney) meet 9am Monday 30th July.
