Is it true that tokyo fixed sold Charlie Roadkill two right hand pedals then somehow forced them on. Consequence was fucked crank on Harley street and he ended up walking to Pitfield street to get it sorted????
Er, I've just seen this thread. Its mad how word gets round
Heres the true story:
I wrecked my real wheel (my fault) on the bumper of a garbage truck in Wardour St turning into Broadwick. Went to Tokyo Fixed and got top service from the long haired mesh hat guy (forget his name but I think he's an Aussie). He rebuilt my wheel perfectly within half an hour and charged me £10.
Thus, having received great service, bought some lights and pedals.
I could not screw my pedal in smoothly on one crank, and being a novice I just assumed it was my old crank being shit, got the pedal in and then realised it had gone in off centre, double threading the crank itself and the crank needed re-threading.
Chris at Cyclelab did it, it was a good, if temporary fix and good work.
On Monday the pedal came out after a knock on the kurb, I was off cicuit for 3 hours
I replaced my crankset and bought new pedals from Cyclelab after walking there from Harley St (via Condor to purchase the 165 Uno crankset - nice one, its a good bit of kit). Chris at Cyclelab pointed out that I'd been sold two right hand pedals (theres a little 'R' on the pedal screw end) - how was I to know this? Well I do now. A right hand pedal obviously wont go into a left hand crank without force, and once in can easily unscrew itself on the road.
To Tokyo Fixed - once I find the receipt I'll pop in and get a refund, I got both the pedals at home.
To everyone else - I dont wanna get into the politics, I got nothing against the shop as I got good service on my wheel, maybe it was a genuine mistake - we're all human?
PS Tokyo Fixed once I find my receipt I'll pop in for a chat and a refund on those pedals!!
i'm confused- being sold a pair of right hand pedals can happen and if you are a novice you may fuck your cranks up fitting them... just bad luck... but it sounds like you're saying that chris at cyclelab rethreaded your cranks and then proceeded to fit a r/h thread in a l/h crank?
Yes he did, you are correct. Chris rethreaded the left crank, put the pedal in (at that stage he assumed it was a regular left hander.), and off I went.
He discovered it when meticulously checking for faults in the thread second time round when he fitted my new crankset.
I think he learned a lesson that day same as me, that pedals come in two 'hands' like gloves, unless a bike shop owner should know and spot these things a mile off.
I got nothing against Chris, Tokyo Fixed or anyone else, and everyone is entitled to their opinion of the event as they see it.
"bike shop owner should know and spot these things a mile off."
he absolutely should. we all make mistakes but it takes quite a bit of force to drive a standard thread into a reverse thread. does he have another job too?
maybe you should get your self a pair of jimmy the cricket wellington boots so you can tell your left from your right? alternatively tattoo lefty/ritey across your knuckles tuff guy, then you'll never forget hahahaha go on my son................
