Assume you'd not been paying tax or declaring your income for a few years. I mean, purely hypothetically. And then you wanted to quit living the dream of being on the road and go back to regular paid employment.
Ive heard of people who've used accountants who specialise in this kind of thing. Any recommendations? Ive also heard of people whove just gone straight back into regular jobs without any trouble, or whove claimed to have been "travelling".
Then there are the ones who got screwed for large amounts of tax and penalties. How would I (purely hypothetically) avoid being one of those?
(In case theres any doubt, Im not looking for any advice on breaking the law, and Im not suggesting anyone on here is doing that or would advocate doing that. But if someone, for whatever reason, found themselves in that situation..)
return to normal work, hand in your NI number and pay the tax. You may be on emergency bracket while they sort you out a number which should not take too long. if for some reason you have (ahem) been out of the system and need to prove how you sustained yourself in this interim period, claim homelessness. They have to prove that you were working and in receipt of payments from employable source.
They dont have access to your bank accounts or any other utility that you may have contributed to. They probably wont ask and if it does come to anything and you feel your consience getting the better of you and you want to donate some splash to Gordys retirement fund, then you can declare the pretaxable amount and hope they wont come a looking. When you are richer and dont want the hassle of this hanging over you at retirment time and your brain has gone to mush, sort it out, pay it off or move to another country and start again.
Good input from sven. However don't forget that there's nothing as valuable as a good accountant. My first 3 years as a courier cost me just 700 quid.
.....Also be aware that every single fucking country in northern europe apart from us is a reasonable place to live if you are on the minimum wage....and you don't get david cameron slimeing at you on tv every night......However there are no pubs.....or hobnobs.......I digress.
