Tried numerous cycling jackets from the stupidly expensive (assos) to the stupidly cheap (unbranded vietnamese plastic), and nothing seems to keep out rain after say a steady 60mins of proper downpour. Only ever tried goretex/equivalent in the snow, where it doesn't really need to be waterproof, and because of the expense i'm hesitant to make it the subject of my next dumb cycling purchase. I'm from melbourne where we no longer get much rain but figure that london couriers might be familiar with it. Much appreciated.

I went the whole hog last year and blew over two hundred on something from North Face - not a cycling jacket - with a shaped hood and properly taped hems and all that malarky. It's still brilliant. It' makes me feel ever so fucking smug during the bad shit! That's gotta be worth the dosh. I should get another two winters out of it, I reckon.

I bought Gore-tex gloves and trousers and they prove to be waterproof enough so I'm getting a jacket now. Bear in mind though that my commute only takes half an hour.

Shoes is my problem now. I'm wearing overshoes but if it's pouring down the water still gets through the bottom of it :(

Hello, I'm not a courier but read your question about waterproof fabric and joined the forum so that I could answer.

I go to Glastonbury every year and despite the bad press about the amount of rain it is never as bad as the papers say most years having said that there have been bad years where I have worn my wellies and wterproofs for all 5 days, my advice is to go to millets and get some Fabsil (it's what we use to waterproof our tent) a couple of years ago somebody trying to be helpful washed my rain jacket! DOH! I went out in the rain acouple of days later and got soaked, then whilst spraying the tent ( and with nothing to lose) I had a eureka moment and sprayed the jacket too! It worked, I was nice and dry under it in 2007 and in the rain since :)

[Insert my obligatory Swrve Milwaukee rant here.]

Srsly - the Swrve Milwaukee is a m a z i n g! My number 1 top piece of kit. I reviewed it a couple of years ago, and experienced the revelation of riding along the A505 at 10pm on a cold night in January, in the freezing cold and pouring rain - and not wanting to stop, because I felt so cosy. It's totally waterproof, and bloody warm too.

Mine's on its third winter, and I actually found myself getting all excited in autumn, looking forward to wearing it again. I've only once got remotely damp in it, and that was after 10 hours of non-stop heavy rain. And I was only a little bit damp. And Chris (the Swrve guy) is really nice, and may be persuadable to offer a discount to soggy couriers.

(They come in at around the £100 mark. And it's worth every penny. Some second-hand ones also floating around on Ebay, LFGSS, etc.)

There was a time at Metro when we were supplied with top quality kit for a small weekly fee of £3.50/£4.00.The goretex jackets were sought after by other couriers some of whom often bought our spares for £100.Sadly those days are long f*cking gone,Metro stopped supplyling our gear and the last batch of goretex jackets were abysmally poor quality.I had three of them, two of which I gave away and one that I still wear now but that's only because I've got nothing else. They let the wind and the rain in and lose their resistance almost immediately.
I am in the market for a new jacket,I'll treat myself for xmas and will probably get the swrve one Emilia's talking about,I've heard good things about them from some others too.

Hey John, been doing internet research on Milwaukee- more fashion item than proper waterproof it seems-
Blacks doing 2 for 1 offers i think-north face/berghaus/mountain equipment more expensive but proper-
years ago i used to work in YHA shop in Covent Garden so know a little about coats!

@breakingaway. I don't think this is a fashion item, unlike north face for instance. Seems to me it is designed with cycling in mind rather than hiking. To me it looks like a functional jacket at a reasonable price. I mean, 10 hour solid downpour and only a little damp. Sold me. So Underpants, Shall we order together to save on the duty, customs bollox?

I can atest to the power of army goretex.
Mine (French) is on its 3rd winter, needs reproofing but still keeps you dry (damp after a few hours of heavy stuff). For the first two years it was like wearing a lightwieght breathable tent, fine for temps up to 12C and absolutely impervious to all weather conitions. The hood (peaked, fully ajustable and accomodates a combat helmet) makes you feel almost detached from the driving rain/sleet/snow.
The key is to find a narrow bodied-long armed size and i would recomend the French one. Compared to the English and American versions, it has massive zipable underarm vents allowing as much extra airflow as you need...
    About £70...
Also army goretex trousers are a bargain, £20-£25 but only in camo...

@overdrive. I know, it's been a while. We should go for a beer sometime soon. And I don't mean Friday Floundry Bollox. Call me. Yeah been to Holland. More precise Haarlem to assure myself that that is where I want to be in a couple of years time. And boy, it is. And as a matter of fact, I did go to the Franz Hals museum in Haarlem and the Anne Frank haus in Amsterdam. Very good it was and I've seen rooms you will not be able to see. Unless you know Eugenie. And then I drank loads of beer and mulled wine and malt whisky and I hope they haven't kicked me off the housing list.

Difference between gore-tex and softshell? Not sure - we should get them together and compare. I have the gore-tex, and it's nice and thick and lined with fleece, which makes it warm too. Stop me anytime you want to try it on.

I am far too evangelical about this hoodie. I will balance it out by admitting that their shorts are nice, but have an unfortunately placed seam that means they'll always wear out within about a month. But the hoodies rock. Did I mention the hoodies rock? They really rock.

I have a Swrve hoodie and the jacket too. I'd say the gore-tex one is more waterproof than the softshell water-resistant. I have the softshell, I mainly use it for commuting as the fit is quite relaxed. It has nice long cut arms and back though and is super warm, way more comfy than any raincoat I've used.
I think part of the reason it would keep rain out for so long is that it is quite thick and would take a lot of soaking to get through, I have never seen water bead on it as it would with gore-tex and similar materials. Still, I would recommend it right now, as it's chuffing baltic out there.

I actually just invested in a Mavic Creek. It's made from Gore-tex paclight. Need to stick a bunch of layers underneath when it's freezing but as for being waterproof it's the best thing I've tried in years, in that it's the only thing I've worked in that has actually kept a days rain out. They are stupid expensive, €290 on chain reaction, I found one on EBAY for £150 which was my upper limit. So far it's been worth it though. Sizing is weird however so beware, definitely get a size up from what you normally would. I always buy medium and I got a large and it's a perfect fit. Something to do with small French people I would imagine.

edit: by comparison I have a Small in the Swrve Milwaukee

goretex and softshell are two slightly different things afaik. goretext is the membrane - which we all praise to be breathable, yet water ressistant. so this membrane can be sewn in-between layers of fabric, depending on the piece of clothing you're buying. In theory (but that's not really good for cycling) you would have a three-membrane clothing being: 1) thermal layer - internal lining, 2) goretex membrane and 3) external lining - usually something windproof.

And if I'm not mistaken softshell is this external lining - quite thick, pretty warm, and reasonably windproof as well as tiny bit waterproof.

Cycling jacket from gore that I got from Gore recently is very thin so to my opinion this is just two membranes - goretex + paclite shell (whatever that is).

    although these are mainly guesses.

How big is the hood an the swrve? I need to be able to fit a beanie full of dreads in it. Secondly I'm 5'10"ish, medium build, what size would be best? I usually buy clothes baggy so don't really know what size I should go for for something to actually fit me properly.

    Cheers for the info Dubmess!

@emilia - are you sure that yours is goretex? i'm pretty sure the only goretex ones are the green ones and the tan ones. the others are just softshell.

we just got 3 size larges in today at velorution (one of the old style goretex in green, and two of the new model, the ES milwaukee which includes pit zips, elasticated cuffs underneath the regular cuffs, better visibility with the hood, and the back pocket which now has side entry).

i just got one for myself as well and i'm pretty excited about it.

Best waterproofing ever: stay at home. Creative couriers always have the best rain gear. I've got a not quite top o' the range creative branded Altura jacket, not snore tex, but all day waterproof, breathable and windproof...strangely my city sprint altura is only mildly showerproof, and about as breathable as a plastic bag. Superkid has an ancient creative jacket, held together with insulation tape and spit, at least 7 years old and going strong, i had one too but it went mouldy. Get down to creative corner and offer them cash for their spare jackets...they'll take any offer, proper hard up they are...

The only Mary whom I know of who works at Velorution has been in her chambers all night, locked in lucubrations at the hands of a paperback I leant her on a short-term loan some time ago. Reasonable internet access is so restricted in the bowels of this house that I can't see anyway she could have written this.

Probably a narc looking for an easy catch... I'd steer well clear.

    @mary - yep, mine's Gore Tex. It's a few years old though.

I went to see Chris a couple of weeks ago, and he says they don't actually do them in Gore Tex any more - they use some other fancy-sounding waterproofing system, whose name I've forgotten. (Still says Gore Tex on the website, hmmm.) I tried on some of the new ones, and they're better designed (cuffs, vents, etc.), and stretchier (therefore more flattering), but I'm not sure they'd be as waterproof. I asked Chris how they perform, and he says he's not sure whether they'd measure up to my 2007 (totally inpenetrable) model, which may just have been a very lucky freak of design. So what I said above may well prove to be too good to be true. Alas... I'm hanging onto mine!
