there have been a few rides to brighton and a few nightrides to various places (other than the dunwich thang), at one point it seemed like brighton was yearly but to my knowledge there hasn't been one in a while. i've floated the idea to a few people and got a fairly enthusiastic response from people who weren't about or just didn't attend previous group rides. seeing as i'm just a part-timenger i'm not really into the dynamo this year though maybe another fear and loathing in the greater cyclist community could be on the cards...

anyways, i'm going to ride to brighton one night this summer, probably on acid, definitely with a bunch of mates/messengers/exengers- seeing as most of you are at least one of those and many are two i thought i should float this here.

who's up for it? should we get enough of us should we think about a support wagon (i know it's only brighton but it means if someone takes a tumble we don't need to involve the authorities)? input welcome- dates etc.

I'd potentially be up for this having never done it (the ride to Brighton that is). The menu sounds a bit ambitious mind although I would consider Xanax.

How 'bout Stonehenge this year Sleepy?? It's a Saturday night and everything.

i still cant believe the official london to brighton ride sold out so quickly, in day apperently! how on earth can a ride sell out? its ridiculas, i was so looking forward to it, why dont they just let more people join thus raising more money for the british heart foundation, it would only need a few extra trains on a sunday night. Having said that a night ride does sound like a great idea, good way to beat the heat, thou you do miss out on the pubs en route.....

i've heard stonehenge is a bit "serious" for my tastes. on this ride there will be giggling, silliness and merriment. rolling to the stones has a rep for lycra, testosterone and vegan cake.

true, stonehenge is more of a challenge then a frolick but then there is the option of a free bit of brecky from the Barrys. A Brighton nightride sounds fun though. Maybe we could engineer some sort of Quadraphenia style set-to with the xeroxingers on the beach.

thinking about it- supported would be much better, how else we gonna towels/shorts/buckets/spades/barbecue/fuckton of beer down?

so, we have a nanu. we may have a dazzlenger. we may even have an overdrive. hopefully p44 will be up for it. we need enough people to afford a decent contribution for a driver and to keep distance between d/od.

once i get ten yays we'll start looking at dates. my preference would be to ride on a saturday night cos i work saturdays but that does mean getting the train (or riding ) back on sunday which can be a bit of a mare...

I'd be up for this, if it's not too close to Dunwich. (I was the lurkenger with tache on the dark grey road bike with the noisy campag wheels on the memorial stencilling ride).

    6th june
    13th june
edit: just seen steff's post- maybe 27th june
    25th july

Do you reckon this is doable on a fixed (68 GI) ? I've been on a few nightime missions but never one this long and I don't know what the hill situation is either. Secondly I'm fairly sure I could get my mate on support car duties if we can cover the petrol and get him some weed.

it's fucking hilly but you won't be alone in riding fixed- i'll be on a 50:20 ratio. your mate sounds like a fucking legend and his 2 wishes could quite easily be granted.

btw it is fairly hilly in places but i've done it on several occasions fixed.

27th June ist gut ja. Diaried.
I'm riding Becky's road bike, simply because my knees have still not quite recovered from the old fall-into-the-engine-room-bilges escapade in february. Also de Ditchling beacon is deeply unfashionable.

    Lookin forward to it.

That sounds really fun, sign me up. Oh, shit I live in Anchorage. Nevermind. Anyone finds themselves passing through Anchorage, look me up. Condor has a nice flight from Frankfurt to Anchorage in summer. It;s good value compared to other airlines and it's a shorter flight. C'mon it's on the way to CMWC, It'll be fun. I'll cook you some BBQ, really I'm not kidding. I'm so lonely.

    no derailing motherfuckers!

festerban- can you ask your mate about the support vehicle?
  5.
Fuckery! Can't do the 27th, I've just found out Clare's working Glastonbury and she's wangled me a guest pass. So I'll be IN a field on acid while you'll all be NEAR fields on acid. And this after I missed the dynamo/Nelly's stag do last year because some selfish "friend" needed me to dress like a lion tamer and shout at his wedding. Why do people insist on doing nice things to me when I want to cripple my limbs?

Perhaps this is the place to start discussing the resurrection of the SuperCow next year? Or attempting the NederCow?

And what are the cascades, Nhatt?

    Cabbie Judas...

    Supercow?

    Nononononono

    No.

    Definitely not.

SleepyJesus... reuniting ye olde club AY would involve bringing Alan along in a box and shouting at him until the rest of his hair fell out or he had a nervous breakdown, whichever came first. Also at some point Gollum would have to crash into a tree, I'd have another fight with Timmy, pigeonboy would have some protracted moonie love affair or other and a certain friend of ours would have to return from the other side of the globe just so's the pair of us could quit just because we felt like it. And someone would have to bring the entire Wong Kei with them so we could abandon the whole adventure halfway through and go for noodles.

    What a lovely thought.

    "Cabbie Judas...

    never say never.

we could just call alan up in the middle of the night? jon has retired from being mashed and probably this kind of thing, could always ask(fuck- just remembered the dunwich incident! AAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHH!!!!). timmy may well be up for it, saw him in brighton on sunday/monday- he'd ridden down with a fucking massive soundsystem on a tandem... maybe you could pair up?

pigeon boy, pretty boy and the wong kei may be more difficult but you can't blame a guy for trying.

i take it 11/7 is not good?

No support vehicle I'm afraid, he's sold his car to buy a bike!

Basically the situation is that after years of smashing my knees up from skateboarding they are not in the best of shape, Pentonville Road is probably the steepest gradient I can manage before they start failing me. It's a fucker because my leg muscles are blatantly up to the test it's just my knees that fail me  . Also I have still yet to scale Muswell and Highgate hill, most of the time I get halfway up and think 'Fuck this I could walk at the same speed and save my energy'. Based on this evidence of my pussyness whad'ya reckon my chances of making it to Brighton are?
