Hi guys... I'm a courier with Excel, but for a few days am working with a TV production company hoping to make a Panorama documentary about us guys (by which I mean cyclists, and not just couriers) getting munched by HGVs.

Basically, Panorama are interested, but are not interested if all we have is a London-based issue. To a lesser extent they're only partially interested in incidents from Oxford and Cambridge, what, therefore, I'm after, are cases from around the land, showing the HGV thing to be the nationwide concern that any cyclist using a road regularly will know it to be. I'm asking about on LFGSS (London fixed-gear single speed, for those outside the south-east) too, and if anyone recalls recent incidents in home towns, has heard stuff from riders elsewhere in the country, then let me know, and I'm happy to chase any leads myself.

Cheers very much in advance, take care out there

So, you want a bicycle messenger to be part of your cool new business delivering mocha chai lattes to city boys? Or just keeping it traditional distributing Bolivia's finest? Oh, you just want someone to do the shit work no one else wants. That's fine but there is some etiquette you may find helpful as the chances are if you're posting on here to find one you don't actually know any and the ones you see in the street are too intimidating/cool/smelly for you to approach and we're one sensitive bunch.

1. The average wage for couriers varies massively but if we say it's £60 a day (not unreasonable?) that does not mean £6 an hour for ten hours, more likely £20 an hour for 3 hours and 7 hours sitting "on plot" bitching at fakengers (or Bill if you work for creative ), smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, eating food out of bins and generally looking cool. The actual working part pays per drop and is dependant upon the size/weight of the package, the distance covered and the urgency. Claiming that a rider should be able to do 100+ drops on a 5 mile run in an hour does not mean that £15 is an appropriate fee, my son.

2. Don't be surprised, shocked or offended when people say nasty things about or to you. We do this to everyone especially our employers and their clients (unless the clients have good toilets or sweets on the counter). They are all slave drivers and far far worse than Hitler and no, we don't care that your grandad was jewish or fought in a war. I said we're sensitive, not sensitive to you.

3. Perks are good. Back in the day that meant a free bag worth £250 and access to best coke to have graced a popstar's nostril, nowadays free food/coffee or whatever would be nice. It can make the difference between someone being rude to your clients and leaving turds floating in their bogs or waltzing into their office generally being amazing.

4. Before posting here, consider actually meeting some couriers in the real world. Full city coffee shop would probably be a good place, or the reprobates on Wood St EC2, if you're really brave you could try Creative corner but they're way cooler than you. You may realise that you want nothing to do with these foul people or you may meet the person for the job, either way you'll be in more of a position to get the right person for your job.

This may well be edited and updated if I can be arsed. Oh, and anyone want to give me some part time work? I've got 2 days a week for the highest bidder- CV supplied on request.

Hopefully it's helpful. Sorry if it sounds like a lecture-I realise some will already know most of this.
The darker the shade of green the harder it is for the driver to see you-ASSUMING HE'S LOOKING IN THE CORRECT MIRROR to see you.
Red areas are completely blind to the driver.Note the blind areas directly in front and to the right of the cab. They are big enough to lose someone pushing a cycle flat against the truck.

Pic 1) and pic 2) Truck turning left/on a left hand bend.
Rear of the trailer will be moving closer to the kerb and further to the left than the cab.
The cab will be on the white line or even crossing into the other carriageway depending on how sharp the turn is and how wide the road is.
Driver is HIGHLY unlikely to be looking in his right hand mirror unless to check if the corner of the trailer is in the right hand lane-and all he'll see in it is the headboard of the trailer if he is.
Predominantly he'll be looking in the left mirror/ahead.

Pic 3) Truck going in a straight line.
This is also the same visiblity as a rigid or non-articulated vehicle. Assume the driver is using his mirrors only in the direction of travel in a rigid vehicle.
If the truck is stationary or it's safe to do so-(ie assuming no oncoming traffic there needs to be no bends in the road coming up and the truck isn't indicating) then this is the safest time to overtake.
DO NOT UNDERTAKE while it's moving-and if you MUST undertake then only do so if you KNOW the truck isn't going to move before you're past.
DO NOT pull up in the nearside red zone by the cab.The kerbside mirror shows very little. If the driver is going to miss you, unless you're directly behind the trailer this is where he'll miss you while the truck is stationary.
We'd far rather you pulled up directly in front of us and we could see you.

Pic 4) and pic 5) Truck turning right/on a right hand bend.
Rear of the trailer will be on the white line or even crossing into the other carriageway depending on how sharp the turn is and how wide the road is.
BEWARE the back end of the trailer-if this is a very sharp bend the rear of the trailer will be moving to the left as it pivots round the axles. This is a SERIOUS crush hazard and the driver CANNOT SEE IT at all and is unlikely to know the trailer has hit someone. I once ripped the front bumper and valence from a Discovery that tried to push through and I didn't feel it.
Driver will be splitting attention between right mirror(back of trailer),left mirror(Is the headboard going to intrude on the path?) and ahead.

If an articulated lorry isn't stopped in a straight line DON'T undertake. Your chances of being seen are slim if bent left and nil if bent right and you're likely to get crushed as either the cab or trailer will be coming very close to the kerb.
For the same reason don't cycle up behind one in the red zone at speed then pass-the driver may already have comitted to a manoevre because his mirrors look clear."

 Hello hello

Not sure if any of you will be able to help, but was filming at the event tonight and appear to not have the wallet that i went in with. and in fact, no wallet at all. just wondering whether anybody might have picked it up by accident? or if in my fever of general excitement - I might have put it into someone else's bag? its got a fair bit of sentimental value, and its got my house keys, bike lock key and it - ridiculously - had a fair bit of cash in it as well. As I say, if anyone has picked it up by accident- I would be massively appreciative if you could give me a text/call on 07966664782.

other than that, it was a brilliant night. well done to the victors and indeed everyone that took part. was quite an amazing feat of physical fitness and a lovely atmosphere. nice one.

thanks again

best,

marigold :-)

I know it's a bit early but who's thinking of going up to Edinburgh for the ECMC in June (15th-17th June)?
Only asking 'cos we're considering whether it would be worth organising some sort of transport to get everyone up there, probably on the Thursday night.

Train tickets are pricey unless you book well in advance and you can only get a few bikes on board;likewise if you travel by bus, might be cheaper but you might not be able to get your bike in..so we're thinking about hiring a coach or get a coach company to sponsor us.

There will also be a ride from London (well kind of) right after the pre-event (7th-9th June) for out of towners and Londoners who fancy riding up to Edinburgh.

More info and website coming soon for the LONDON CALLING pre-event....
Check ECMC website: http://www.ecmc2012.co.uk/

This just in from The Evening Standard.

Like milkmen, bathroom attendants, cockle barrows and Geri Halliwell, cycle couriers continue to exist in spite of increasing irrelevance and rapidly declining demand for their services. Even though paper communication is on the way out and couriers have less to deliver than ever before, there’s no cyclist on the road so heavily romanticised. Others look on in awe as they glide through the city like Atlantic mackerel in the Gulf Stream. The courier is silent. He’s mystical. He’s a scrawny, greasy-legged beacon of fitness (he can cycle upwards of 70 miles a day) with street knowledge to rival any cabbie. Identifiable by the sticker-plastered walkie-talkie clipped to his backpack, but also by an inexplicable penchant for leggings worn under swamp-coloured combat shorts and matching fingerless gloves, it’s safe to say that the courier is no sartorial trailblazer, but who cares when you have near-Olympian fitness? In terms of road-sharing, the rivalry between couriers and taxi drivers is a wild, ugly battle that brings out the worst in both. To illustrate, there’s one, often spotted around the City, who boasts tattooed calves: one says ‘F**K’, the other ‘TAXIS’. It’s like the interminable battle of an urban Wile E Coyote and Road Runner. On wheels.

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/lifestyle/esmagazine/chain-gangs-spot-londons-cycling-tribes-7665099.html
I've just been shown a link to a web page requesting that people email Add Lee to demand an apology for some antagonising words in the spring 2012 AddLib propaganda 'magazine' that dwells within Add Lee cabs. John Griffins proudly published statement can be found here on page 5.

I agree that cycling completely unaware of your surroundings is unsafe. But the suggestion that cyclists should have to pay for a license and be taxed for road usage is insane and appears to come from a green eyed monsters point of view. The Guardian recently reported that AddLee cars and people carriers should freely use bus lanes as their fines will be covered by the company. Does this mean they would pay riders fines for being on the pavement, playing chicken on one way streets or cycling through shopping centres?

Hi. Before I blabber, better introduce myself. I'm Ben. I run Big Blue Bike cycle couriers based in Cardiff.
Thought I would post this up here as it directly relates to the industry of moving things by bike and what that could mean in the future.

The Cycle Logistics Federation has been sought by the guys at Outspoken Delivery in Cambridge. Here is how they have approached this idea.

"Discussions with other cycle based delivery companies has highlighted that there is no one group or professional body which represents and supports the needs of cycle logistics companies such as ourselves. Therefore with encouragement from CYCLELogistics (see www.cyclelogistics.eu), an EU funded project we are involved in to promote delivery of freight by bicycle, we have concluded that a Cycle Logistics Group (ie an Association or Federation) should be established to start to make our voices heard at the highest level.

Initial thoughts on the primary aims of the proposed Group, subject to discussion and agreement include:
- highlighting best practice
- sharing knowledge and experience
- establishing a lobby group(s) to influence relevant stakeholders
- identifying opportunities for shared promotions, marketing and costs
- establishing appropriate information resources.

It is envisaged that the Group would be targeted at:
- established cycle logistics businesses (eg. delivery companies, couriers, pedicab operators, tradespeople, organisations which use cycles as part of their business operations, etc)
- start-up businesses considering using cycles as part of their business operations
- manufacturers and suppliers of cycle logistics equipment."

There is a meeting of various groups in the cycle logistics industry scheduled for Saturday 14 July 2012 @ Cambridge Chesterton Indoor Bowls Club just outside Cambridge City Centre (address Logans Way, Chesterton, Cambridge CB4 1BL).
Anyone who is interested in attending please contact gary @ Outspoken directly - gary.armstrong at outspokendelivery.co.uk

Thanks

Ben from Big Blue Bike.

A couple of weeks ago the firm I work for was cold called by a Churchill Express salesman.
Churchill were offering minimums at £2.95. No catch. Not a first 4 weeks intro. Not w1-w1 or ec-ec. Usual minimum pushie area at £2.95.
I escaped the road a few years back. But the postroom team knows I was a biker for yonks.
What did I know about Churchill?
Not a lot but I was sure nobody charged less than £3.95 minimum when I was on the road. Apart from deals with Goldmans and Coopers & Lybrand. I didn't know anyone experienced who'd worked for them on a bike. Not a good sign.
Looking thru threads on here they have a bad rep.
That famous blog post where the fat preppy girl decides to be a pushie and gets ripped off was Churchill.
£2.95 has to be too good to be true.
Order just about anything from Amazon and you'll get charged that for postage.
What are they paying their riders?
I asked a biker I know to poke his nose in. The usual greasy bikers in Smithfield reckon Churchill pay a £4.50 minimum for bikes and a fair pushie rate. Maybe £2.75.
So how can they do £2.95 minimums?
More to the point how can they be thick enough to think they can make money at that price?
The lot we use charge a fiver or so +VAT. The postroom likes them. They're quite professional.
We haven't switched. Yet. But a lot of firms will.
£2.95. That's not even a Pret sandwich.
Anyone know if any firm is trying to match that?
