Hi everyone, I am thinking about starting up a courier bike business. I am not from the UK, but regardless, I'm sure my city can support such an endeavour. Now, initially, it will be a two man show - equipped with bikes, bags, and 2 way cell phones, dispatched through direct call, page or, email accounts.

The front-end of the website I will be building, but need a coder to collect and distribute payments and accounts. This is where I hesitate... I'm not really sure on a pricing scheme - or how about to go about inquiring (that's why I'm here :)).

I would like someone to explain to me some of the intricacies of the business... Payment, zoning, guaranteed delivery times, dispatch, things like that. I mean, basically, I need to know even small details like what happens if you get a couple of cold-calls (out of the blue requests for delivery), and payment is in cash? What's the normal drill? Drop off, deduction from you pay, etc?

I just don't know. I am hoping to find someone who does or at least can point me to another resource. :)

Thanks all for your time, can't wait to be back on the road again!

I'm a cyclist whose always lived in London and have a decent geographical/street knowledge for a 'civillian'.
I am going to do The Knowledge to become a black cabbie and think that becoming a cycle courier may help speed this up a bit. Im happy doing grafting hard for a living as long as i dont have to sit in a f****ng office

Was wondering if this is a common chain of thought or if anyone has some advice/experience:

Is there any danger of earning less than £250 a week?
How much endurance should you build up in advance? (miles per day)
How close do you get to jacking it in the winter?

 Hi guys,

Hope you are well! My name is Adam Sweetingham and i am the owner of a company called the Green route. We are Oxfords first real cycle courier company and we need a little help.

We have pretty much done everything we need to do to set up company. Found premises, ordered some really cool bullitt courier bikes, having website completed with full accounts and admin system. We are in discussion with the council for a big contract and also found other companies that are dying to use our service. Complete marketing strategy in place etc. All sound really good . . . .

Slight problem is my and my business partner have never worked as cycle courier and really need some sound advice on the operational side of the business; we have all our services planned out and how we are going to offer them but now we really need to know how to execute them!!

Why are looking at finding someone with loads of experience and paying them to come and sit down with us for a couple of hours and really mentor us on the operations of a successful cycle courier.

We really plan to make this a professional organisation and really need some industry expertise to help us achieve this! We can come to meet you in London or you can meet us in oxford with travel expenses paid!

We are friendly guys and could really do with someone on the inside from the off! Is that person you??

ITN are currently putting together an episode of ‘Tonight’, which investigates the increase of pot holes in the UK and how they are disrupting people in their day-to-day lives. We’d really like to hear from any couriers, who have been affected by potholes whilst at work. Have you suffered personal injury as a result of hitting a pothole? Or has your vehicle been damaged by one? If yes – we’d love to hear from you. – Specifically, it would be great to hear from motorcycle couriers, but all vehicle drivers who have had problems or accidents are welcome too, so please get in touch!

My email is tim.maynard@itn.co.uk or call 0207 430 4036

Many Thanks

Tim Maynard

Tried numerous cycling jackets from the stupidly expensive (assos) to the stupidly cheap (unbranded vietnamese plastic), and nothing seems to keep out rain after say a steady 60mins of proper downpour. Only ever tried goretex/equivalent in the snow, where it doesn't really need to be waterproof, and because of the expense i'm hesitant to make it the subject of my next dumb cycling purchase. I'm from melbourne where we no longer get much rain but figure that london couriers might be familiar with it. Much appreciated.

 Hi everyone.

I'm doing a short report on the postal strike, and more importantly the impact it has had on bicyle couriers. What would really help would be if I could speak to somebody in this line of work just to ask a few questions. It would only take a moment of your time and if necessary I will just e-mail the questions to you for you to reply to in your own words. I do not work for a newspaper or any other publication, I am a journalism student and this is purely for coursework bases. I would be extremely grateful if somebody could do this for me so drop me an email or PM if you fancy helping a guy out!

Thanks.

Owen

Last year, we planned to launch a pedicab service here in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

But, we encountered problems with funding, and in addition, Sheffield City Council said they would actively seek to prevent us from operating in the absence of national legislation. Their refusal to grant, or even discuss, a designated license for rickshaws has forced us to take a different approach.

As a Ltd Company Cooperative, we are in the process of fighting this decision, whilst seeking a specific, legislated license to operate cycle rickshaws in the city.

In the mean time, we are planning on setting up a 2 wheel cycle messenger service, and are looking for like-minded folk willing to help make this a reality.

So, we´re looking for like minded people, with a passion for bikes, willing to discuss possible involvement and membership to our cooperative.

You will need to have worked in the industry, be willing to be a part of a new team, have at least 3 months messenger experience, and worked in London, New York, Vancouver or similar messenger friendly city. Most importantly, you are willing to work hard and take a risk. Sheffield is built upon seven hills, so not ideal for fixies.

You must be able to relocate to the North of England, but, there´s a spare room in the house I share, and I´d be more than happy to help you out finding part-time work until this venture pays-out.

Best regards,

Nick J Oodian – Vert-i-GO Operations Manager
07758000282
wishdokter@gmail.com
Linked-In profile:
http://www.linkedin.com/in/vertigopedicabs
Actics Profile:
http://www.actics.com/vert-i-go_pedicabs

We are looking to find better solutions for parking furniture that can be integrated easily into the urban landscape. As London bike messengers you are one of our main user groups in that you make regular, short stop-offs and we would love to have some feedback on what you problems you encounter and how they can be addressed. We would like to do a short interview, no more than 5 min, which would include answering couple of questions. This would be video taped for research documentation and would not be made public (if you were concerned).

If you would like to get involved then please get in touch. I'm sick to death of being pigeon-holed into office jobs so I'm looking at other options and came across this. I was just wondering what the standard sort of bike is you folks ride for your work. An MTB? Road racer? Hybrid? Whatever's cheapest so it getting nicked ain't a total disaster? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Being a cycle courier is a demanding, stressful and an exhausting profession.Problems arise for couriers in a number of ways.Problems arising from structural misalignment.Note:That most people do not realize they have structural imbalances until they are overwhelmed by repetitive strain injuries.Injuries such as this are career threatening unless handled with a full and experiential knowledge of this subject. There is the physical price to be paid for cycling all day hunched over the handlebars of a bike, structural alignments are difficult to maintain in such a position,There is a large amount of stress to the spine, shoulders and shoulder blades, hip, knee and ankle joints. At times it is difficult to gain the feedback from cycling itself to make structural changes that can improve your riding technique. If you suffer from constant niggles and pains, numbness in the limbs, road rage etc.then Qi Gong can help you short term to mitigate the symptoms and long term to eradicate the causal factors involved. The bio-mechanics of classical Qi Gong exercise can address the long term chronic tensions and blockages that inhibit your tracking to the pedal. This is a specialist skill that has to be taught by someone with experience in advanced structural observation.Benefits for the courier include:th releasing of blockages which inhibit deeper diaphragmatic breathing, improved lower limb tracking, identifying spinal imbalances that are negatively effect your tracking.Ground your force and balance and strengthen your joints.Improve recovery rates Increase your cycling economy.Less effort more speed!!Plus generally learn how to deal with rage responses through a neural re-patterning technique unique to some forms of Qi Gong meditation. You are invited to a talk and demo and taster session of Qi Gong(FOR COURIERS)on the WEDNESDAY 19th SEPTEMBER at 7pm at Chris Ray`s Real Taoism Studio AT 142 Charing Cross Rd.Cost £10.Pre-booking necessary-call Asen(HonkyTonk)07904 265 628 to book.

Cheers Boss, maybe a usergroup here for organising this? It's gonna be a big event.

Wondering whats going on with this because I'm kind of responsible for the idea in the first place (Basel). I'm probably back in the Northern hemisphere April, so should be able to help a bit.
Has the LBMA got anything to do with it? I'd suggest that because of a likely high alleycat content for the event it shouldn't be but that a Rollapaluza and or sossidges on the same weekend could work well.
Chris + Co. parties also good idea and the longest kid seem to be behind it, mostly a case of co-ordinating everything. And sorting out housing.
As far as racing to Hollyhead, it needs to be a format that allows a bunch just to ride it too. I can probably find quite a bit of floorspace in Bristol and could throw an Alleycat there (if anyones got any energy left). Its 120 miles from London so would be a big push for one day though. Catch a train to Reading or Swindon and start from there maybe? Riding out of London with a big gaggle of muppets would be fun though.. Are there still couriers in Cardiff?? Can they put a race on? We'll need a support vehicle or two.
Whats the dates..? Dublins Aug 3rd-7th.
