Raphapaluza Qualifying Times
15.02.07 by Buffalo Bill

A Rollapaluza record of 54 racers participated in the beer, beats and bicycle racing that was Saturday night at the Shoreditch Town Hall. I have listed all the qualifying times in ascending order. It’s not possible to compare the times from the Have-A-Go with the Team, as the two sets of rollers are far from identical and I also have no idea what the gearing on the Dutch rollers were.

Team Competition Qualifying Times Male

  1. Sir Nellington Webster, Cycling Weekly Fakenger – 23.59 secs (500m)
  2. Stuart Robinson, Fireflies – 23.96
  3. Kaspar von Metrokontrolar, Messenger Donkey – 24.03
  4. Mikey, Messenger Muppets – 24.20
  5. Steve ‘the Ringer’ Calland, Cycling Weekly – 24.99
  6. Mike Hawkins, Cycling Weekly – 25.13

  14. Fouad Kanaan, Gymboys – 29.12
  15. Michael Dearden, Gymboys – 29.41
  16. John Lockwood, Fireflies – 30.01

We organised the team competition so that no two team members could meet each other in the first round. Therefore we had the slowest CW guy against the fastest messenger, the second fastest gym-boy against the third fastest Firefly etc. This was a change from the standard Rollapaluza format. Normally I would match the slowest against the fastest, second slowest against second fastest etc. The standard RP format aims to keep the 2 fastest qualifiers apart until the final (if they win all their knock-out rounds). What am I trying to explain and why? I am not sure…

Female Have-A-Go Qualifying Times

  1. Susanne Blacksheep – 26.99
  2. Nhatt – 28.89

The Have-A-Go times were all set on the dodgy Dutch rollers. Although there are still some problems with them, they appear to be around 2 to 3 secs quicker over 500m than the Catford CC set-up which was used on the stage. At Rollapaluza VII, Jos and Caspar both went under 20 secs for 500m on the Dutch rollers, with the LBMA bikes. Not really sure why these times are slower than at RP 7; the only explanation is that the Catford bike must be slower than the LBMA bikes, which were used on stage at Raphapaluza.

Thanks to Mark Denton, who was in charge of the qualification for the Have-A-Go section. And also posted the fastest time. Hmmm…

  1. - better quality epo available at the Rollapaluza joints?
If team donkey are recruiting I’m in. Rumour has it big things are expected of them in the combined egg-and-spoon / slow bike race school sports day scene this season. Man, we gonna tear that circuit up!

  3. The times were different at Shoreditch on the Dutch rollers because the gearing was different Catford CC’s bike.
