Marco is leaving

Marco is one of the fastest bicycle messengers in London. A couple of months ago I was exiting the Moving Target compound. Up ahead I caught a glimpse of Marco heading into town on Hackney Road.

He isn’t going that fast, I thought. I’ll up the pace and catch him.

I chased him down Hackney Road, increasing my pace as it became clear that, despite giving the impression of gliding across the tarmac, Marco was booking, as our North American cousins used to say. Past Hoxton and into Old Street, I pushed the pace more, unable to close the gap.

Up ahead Marco was still serenely floating through the traffic, not thrashing and swerving like some wanna-be wheelster, buffeted by the stop-start traffic-flow, more like a glider catching thermals through scudding clouds. After riding so hard that my breakfast was starting to complain, I caught him. He flashed his broad smile, and greeted me cheerfully. I could barely speak.

I like Marco, and I will be sorry to see him go. Come and celebrate Marco, and raise a little more cash for the deserving needy of Mercedes-Benz, next Friday.

In the meantime, here’s a totally unrepresentative video of Marco in action.

  1. I’m not sure whether this means marco is amazingly fast or Buff is terribly slow? Ho Ho merry christmas

  5. This story reminds me of something similar that happened to me:
A couple of months ago I was exiting the House of Pistard compound. Up ahead I caught a glimpse of Bill bothering the chickens at Hackney Farm.

He isn’t going that fast, I thought. I’ll have to cut the pace and avoid him him.

I chased him down Hackney Road, slowing my pace as it became clear that, despite Bill’s own impression of himself, he was ‘bookish’, as our english teacher used to say. Past Hoxton and into Old Street, I pushed the pace more, unable to ride as slow as him.

Up ahead Bill was still sluggishy floating through the traffic, thrashing and swerving like some wanna-be wheelster, buffeted by the stop-start traffic-flow, like an empty Buckfast bottle floating through raw rewage. After laughing so hard that my breakfast was starting to complain, I caught him. He flashed his broad smile, and slammed into the back of a bus. I could barely speak.

You’re broken thumb sympathy has officially run out

  6. What sympathy?

Don’t be getting too merry at the Snow tonight westcoast – or you might find that the H of P child-slaves take their revenge in an ingenious and painful way…

  7. Due to the current workload we sold all the kids to Madonna and replaced them with state-of-the-art robots.
By the way it’s supposed to say ‘raw sewage’ up there, ‘Buckfast blah, blah, blah…raw SEWAGE
