Plane trees line many French roads. Like this. It is very pleasing on the eye, and breaks up the often flat and boring country-side very well. Not to mention turning carbon dioxide into oxygen, ameliorating the effect of the motor transport that uses the roads. However, the French are terrible drivers, and if you run off the road, you will hit one of these trees, and come to an abrupt stop. Consequently, there was a campaign in south western France to remove these trees, so that Gallic youth can run off the road without fear of serious injury. Surely the right thing to do would be to get drivers to slow down and take care? An unrealistic goal, let’s cut the trees down instead.
