Rapha Roller Race - Feb 10th
23.01.07 by Buffalo Bill
Therese Bjorn, who is organising the event on behalf of Rapha, says that she wants to ‘recreate how spectacular roller racing was in the 50s when it was held at Mecca dance halls in between dance sets, but updating it to 2007. So there will be a bar, DJs, images projected on the wall while the racing is taking place’. As well as the 4-way match-up between teams of couriers, bankers, gym-bunnies and media-types, (to qualify for the courier team, you have to be in the top 4 of Rollapaluza VII), there will be an all-comers roller race, which feature head-to-head racing of the 10 best qualifiers.
The fabulous venue for the event is the Ballroom of Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street EC1 (picture right), and more details of it can be viewed here. This must be the most impressive space that a roller race has been held in anywhere in the world since the 1950s. More details are due to be posted on the Rapha site shortly. This could be the most exciting cycling event to happen in the capital this side of Le Tour, and a lot less expensive too.
It is not likely that the world’s only ever professional Roller Racer, Eddie Wingrave, will attend, but you can view an interview with him here.
