1940s cycle speedway in Hackney

Last week’s Hackney Gazette (dated Thursday 12th February) carries an article by John Goldsmith on the golden age of cycle speedway.
‘Cycle speedway developed as teenagers copied their… …heroes on the post-war ruins of the blitz. They stripped down their bicycles, including their brakes, and commandeered any suitable waste ground to mark out the track.’
I naughtily scanned the article, and put it on flickr here. You can find out more about cycle speedway on ‘cycle speedway’s leading website, spokesman-online.co.uk.’ here.
